DEAD FLOWERS FOR ALICE - on vinyl

Phil Shoenfelt & Southern Cross are happy to announce the long-awaited vinyl release of their classic recording Dead Flowers For Alice, the iconic front cover of which features a young Agáta Hanychová.
The album was first released in CD format by Czech label Indies in 1999. Later in 1999 it was released by the German label Golden Core (a subdivision of ZYX), and in 2000 it was released by the Greek label Soulsister, a division of Hitch-Hyke Records.
Twenty four years later, the German label Last Year’s Youth has released Dead Flowers For Alice on high quality vinyl. Slightly shorter than the CD version, the vinyl edition has a warm analogue sound and includes a limited run of 100 copies in white vinyl.

CAROLINE SAYS ... AND MORE


A four-song online EP will be released on 19th April 2024, by FUEGO.
The title is: CAROLINE SAYS … AND MORE and includes two cover versions, a collaboration and an original.

The dominant theme could be described as romantically obsessive, even emotionally masochistic love, leading at some point to disillusion, madness and at the extreme end of the spectrum, physical violence...

Track 1 is a collaboration with Volker Regner and Anna-Lisa Schulig called “Come Along With Me”, a moody, atmospheric piece that lyrically emotes the joy and euphoria of a new love affair, while at the same time hinting at the melancholic ending to come.

Track 2 is a cover version of “Blindest Love” by Roland Popp and Raindogs. Here, we can see the euphoria of first love continuing, even while the narrator knows that his lady love is cheating on him. Phil’s version of this classic indie pop song will be included on the Raindogs compilation CD, CÃES DANADOS, which has been getting substantial radio play in Portugal.

Growing ever darker, the EP continues with an atmospheric version of “Caroline Says II” from the Lou Reed album Berlin. Here, masochistic and obsessive love degenerates into physical violence, with the classic opening lines: Caroline Says / As she gets up off the floor / Why is it that you beat me / It isn’t any fun. The track sees Phil making his debut on drums, as well as playing acoustic and electric guitars, bass and keyboards.

The final track, “Road Of No Return” features the incredible drumming of Jarda Kvasnička from Southern Cross and sees Phil making a rare foray into socio-political commentary – the first time, in fact, that he has done this since Khmer Rouge folded in 1986. The lyrics are non-specific, and the conflicts alluded to could be anywhere in the world. The atrocities carried out could be by any terrorist group or army of any nation or region. The point is to recognize that the world is gradually being enveloped by regional conflicts that are spreading into ever-wider confrontations, fuelled by monetary, religious, ethnic and territorial disputes. In effect, it’s like World War Three happening in slow motion. The song bemoans the brutality and lack of compassion on all sides. But probably it’s been like this ever since the human race crawled out of the primordial swamp. Genghis Khan wasn’t a very compassionate guy either…

Phil recently recorded the Raindogs song "Blindest Love" for the upcoming tribute album
"Cães Danados - Raindogs Cover Songs" (ANTI-DEMOS-CRACIA/Camouflage Records).
The song will be premiered on Nuno Calados' radio show "Indiegente" on 25th April 2024 at 23:00 (Lisbon time).

"Cães Danados" will be released in digital format and on limited CD edition end of May 2024.

Kürzlich war Phil an einem Filmprojekt beteiligt: "Pistol". Das Skript basiert auf einem Drehbuch des slowakischen Schriftstellers Peter Krištůfek, und Phil spielt die Rolle des ausgebrannten britischen Rockstars Johnny Stormwell.

Der vierminütige Teaser wurde im September 2021 in Bratislava gedreht, Regie führte Michal Baumbruck. Derzeit sucht die in Bratislava ansässige Produktionsfirma Punkchart unter der Leitung von Maroš Šlapeta nach Fördermitteln für den Film, eine Noir-Komödie, die sich auch mit ernsthaften sozialen Themen auseinandersetzt.

Jarda Švec was one of the first people I met when I arrived in Prague almost thirty years ago. He was at U Vystřelenýho oka the first time I played there with Tichá Dohoda in the summer of 1994. He was there the last time Southern Cross played on 18.12.2021 – which happened to be my 69th birthday. Between those two dates he became my close friend and also played saxophone with Southern Cross in 1996/97. For the past 20 years, he has played on our song “Damage” every time we had a concert at U Vystřelenýho oka – even to the point where his participation became an expected event, a kind of tradition. And people loved him for it, they enjoyed his extrovert and unpredictable performances. In fact, it was the climax of the gig, the point at which people stood on benches and tables, danced, shouted and sang along.
He played on “THE BELL RINGER – LIVE AT THE SHOT-OUT EYE”, the live CD we released in 2015. He was famous for his contribution to the Dadaistic band ŽENY, a classic fusion of free jazz and Czech underground music, with lyrics influenced by parody and the “nonsense” poetry of Christian Morgenstern. Most of all, though, Jarda was famous for being himself. It was amazing how many people knew and loved him. You could play a gig in Ostrava, for example, and a complete stranger you’d never met before would come up and tell you a Jarda Švec story. Everywhere he was known as “Jarda Švec, umělec”, and in the widest sense of the word he was an artist – if that means someone with a unique point of view, who successfully transmits that feeling and worldview to other people. Someone who can make you look at things differently, whether through art, music, literature or story-telling. His yarns were brilliant, with a kind of wisdom and sly humour that made sure you never forgot them. Maybe he wasn’t a genius on sax – though actually he sometimes was – but his humour, his enthusiasm and his life-embracing vibe more than made up for any shortcomings. He was the genius loci of U Vystřelenýho oka, the permanent štamgast, the guy who would always show up at some point in the evening. The type of guy you could depend on as a friend, the type of guy who could put things in perspective whenever you were feeling down. Some kind of guru, some kind of shaman, a beer-loving zen buddhist stoner. So when I learned in the early hours of this morning that he had died after a short illness, I was shocked, saddened and in a state of disbelief – devastated would be a better word for it. I know that his many hundreds of friends – both in Prague and across the country – must be feeling the same way. The impression he made on us all is profound, and his passing has left an empty space in our lives and in our hearts. U Vystřelenýho oka won’t be the same without him – though it will still  to be a magical place. But no more Jarda going from table to table, sharing joints and holding forth, entertaining friends and strangers alike with his outrageous jokes and stories. No more taking his beloved sax from its case, no more flights of sonic improvisation on “Damage”. How can it possibly be? But truly, that was his last performance with us in December 2021, and my heart weeps and I can’t accept it. Thank you, Jarda, for your friendship, good humour, originality and humanity. I count myself lucky that I was privileged enough to know you and count you as my friend. I know that Pavel Krtouš, Jarda Kvasnička and David Babka feel the same way. Goodnight, dear friend, we’ll meet sometime for a beer and a joint at that great U Vystřelenýho oka in the sky.

PS & SC would like to express our sadness at the death of our friend Babis Argyriou. Babis was a key figure in the Greek music scene, especially in his hometown Thessaloniki. In spite of long-term health problems, Babis was energized by his passionate love of music. He managed to transcend, or at least work around, these challenges to his health. In the early 1980s he started a pirate radio station (Radio Free), which gave exposure to Punk and New Wave, as well as to independent American and Australian bands. These included Wipers and Husker Du (two of his favorites), Sunnyboys and New Christs. Later, he started the legendary Greek fanzine Rollin’ Under, which promoted local Greek bands, as well as American and Australian acts.
Babis and Rollin’ Under also put together cassette collections, which were released by Lazy Dog. Lazy Dog Records later became an established and influential label. Babis was involved in the release of a series of seven inch vinyl singles and re-issued albums by bands such as Mecano, Zounds and The Mob. At the same time, he was running a small record store and was a key member of the Thessaloniki DIY (Do It Yourself) scene. This included a network of independent record labels and music stores, distribution services, pirate radio stations, rehearsal spaces and recording studios. The common denominator was the DIY ethos, a sense of shared musical values, community and cooperation, rather than competition:

In the 1990s Babis supported the music of Phil Shoenfelt & Southern Cross, as well as Fatal Shore and Dim Locator. At the start of the new millennium, he founded the music site mic.gr.  Without his support, our music would not have reached such a wide audience of independent music fans in Greece. Last year he put together a brilliant collection of our music for Mixcloud.
In the words of his long-time friend Hristos Peltekis, Babis was “a unique man, honest, humble, unselfish, with a great sense of humour.” He leaves behind a legacy of love, community spirit, influence and music – as well as three music-related books – and will be sorely missed by everyone he interacted with.

The concert took place last September 12th on the Fountain Stage at Výstaviště, Prague, and Phil was invited to sing "Pumping For Jill", the song that Ivan co-wrote with Iggy Pop. Phil was backed by some fantastic musicians, including guitarist Honza Ponocný, who was also musical director of the event. Other participants who sang Ivan's songs included: Lenka Dusilová, Petr Fiala, David Koller, James Harries, Michal Hrůza, Aneta Langerová, Cirkus Ponorka,Tonya Graves, Ivan Hlas and Saša Langošová. In addition to the concert, each participant was interviewed on camera and asked to share his/her thoughts about Ivan Král and his music. Ivan's widow Cindy Hudson was a special guest at the event, and was also interviewed by Czech Television. Cirkus Ponorka started the concert, and Phil played second, just over five minutes into the Event.

Das deutsche Label Moloko + veröffentlicht am 08.03.2021 eine neue Compilation-CD, "Being On The Beat".
Das Thema der CD ist die revolutionäre Technik des "Cut-Up", wie sie von William Burroughs und Brion Gysin in den frühen 1960er Jahren entwickelt wurde. Rex Joswig von der Berliner Band Herbst In Peking hat eine brillante Sammlung von Cut-Ups zusammengestellt, darunter Lesungen von William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso und Jürgen Ploog, mit backing tracks von Bands wie Tarwater und Mimetic Field. Track 17 ist Dim Locators "Trash My Libido".
Die CD enthält ein 28-seitiges Booklet mit Fotos, Collagen und experimentellen  Texten in Deutsch und Englisch. Phil Shoenfelts "Kronen Cut Up" bildet das Kernstück der Booklets.
Die CD ist sehr schön aufgemacht und ist ein Must-have für alle, die sich für Beat-Literatur und experimentelle Soundcollagen interessieren.

Bei dieser Show in der "Bowery Electric" in New York City wird die Veröffentlichung von New York Junks neuestem Album "Dreaming" gefeiert - zusammen mit mehreren internationalen Bands und Künstlern, die live im "Bowery Electric" spielen oder virtuell zugeschaltet werden (in Phils Fall direkt aus seiner Wohnung in Prag-Zizkov).

Der in Prag lebende amerikanische Autor und Journalist Thor Garcia hat eine fantastische Rezension der 1995 erschienenen "Live In Prague"-CD von Phil Shoenfelt mit Tichá Dohoda geschrieben. Thor sagt, es sei eine seiner Lieblings-CDs! Die Rezension wurde auf Goodreads veröffentlicht. Ein brillantes und einfühlsames Stück Rockkritik, ein literarisches Meisterwerk für sich!

Dave Kusworth ...
"So sad to hear the news yesterday of Dave Kusworth's passing. A master songwriter and guitarist, a man with a beautiful soul. We go back a long way, at least until 1992, and were on the same record label for a while, when the Jacobites reformed in the early 90s. I have fond memories of hanging out with him in Camden Town pubs such as The Falcon and The Good Mixer before I moved to the Czech Republic. We later re-connected in Prague, where I organized a couple of gigs for him. In 2006 ran into each other once again at Nikki Sudden’s funeral, and we played together at Nikki memorial concerts in London, Ebensee, and (in 2007) in Vitoria, Spain. The last time I saw Dave was in 2016 at the ten years after Nikki Sudden Tribute concert in London. He will be sadly missed by the true rock and roll cognoscenti, but he made his mark, created a legend and wrote dozens of heart-achingly brilliant songs.  I am sad, sad, sad – but also happy that Dave existed and that he was my friend for a while. Sincere condolences to Anouschkat and the Kusworth family."

 Hier ein kurzes Update um Euch wissen zu lassen, was in letzter Zeit in Sachen Gigs los ist. Es ist unnötig zu erwähnen, dass aufgrund der Covid-Situation alles etwas chaotisch ist.

Ob Ihr nun denkt, dass es Schwachsinn ist oder nicht: Tatsache ist, dass seit dem vergangenen Mittwoch mehrere Länder die Tschechische Republik als "Covid Hot Zone" bestimmt haben. Phil fuhr am Montag, den 7. September nach Berlin, um mit Dim Locator für die Konzerte im Wiener "Fluc" und auf dem "UniMoon Festival" in Prag zu proben. Zum Glück war er bereits in Berlin, als das deutsche Außenministerium Prag als "rote Zone" deklarierte. Dadurch vermied er es, mehrere Tage in Quarantäne zu gehen. Das Problem der Band war, dass die Berliner Mitglieder (Chris Hughes, Baron Anastis und Daniel Plashues sowie Special Guest Kristof Hahn von Swans), wenn sie beim UniMoon Festivals in Prag spielen wollten, PCR-Tests hätten machen müssen bevor sie nach Berlin zurückkehrten. Sie hätten somit mehrere Tage in Quarantäne verbringen müssen, bis sie die Ergebnisse erhalten. Das konnten sie sich nicht leisten. Daher beschloss die Band über Leipzig, Regensburg und Passau nach Wien zu fahren - und Tschechien vollständig zu meiden. Dies bedeutete eine Fahrt von 940 km für einen Auftritt in Wien, aber es war trotzdem ein fantastisches Konzert! Vielen Dank an Peter Nachtnebel vom "Fluc" und das wundervolle Wiener Publikum!

Am Freitag fuhren die Berliner über Passau nach Berlin zurück - ebenfalls um Tschechien zu meiden - während Phil über Znojmo wieder ins Land zurückkehrte und am Samstagabend das "UniMoon-Festival" spielte, bei dem er von "Band Of Heysek" aus Brno unterstützt wurde. Ein weiteres fantastisches Konzert und vielen Dank an Lukáš, Bob und Honza für ihre Hilfe in letzter Minute!  Es ist eine großartige Band, schaut sie Euch an.
 
Was den Southern Cross-Auftritt am 1. Oktober im Rock Cafe betrifft: Das Konzert findet statt! Es ist jedoch zweifelhaft, ob Kristof Hahn und Chris Hughes es aufgrund der oben genannten Covid-/Quarantäne-Probleme an der deutsch-tschechischen Grenze schaffen werden. Wir halten Euch auf dem Laufenden. Aber das Konzert mit Southern Cross im "Rock Café" findet statt - mit oder ohne Chris und Kristof.

 ENRICO "ENNI" HAGEN
PS & SC announce with great sadness the death from cancer of our dear friend and promoter Enrico “Enni” Hagen, who passed away in Dresden on the 23rd of June. Enni was a lifelong music fan, an old-school maverick with a rock and roll heart, who also happened to be a fantastic promoter – both independently and through his beloved club “Skullcrusher”. We have great memories of playing there with Sigue Sigue Sputnik a few years ago, and he also promoted excellent concerts at other Dresden clubs, such as Alte Feuerwache and Tante Ju. The “New York Night” concerts he promoted for PS & SC, New York Junk, Deadbeat Poets and Lorraine Leckie in 2012 and 2013 were exceptional. Enni was out of the promoting business for a while due to ill health, but made a triumphant return in November 2018 with two Phil Shoenfelt solo concerts at Alte Feuerwache and Red Rooster, both of which were sold out. As well as being a talented and caring promoter, Enni looked like a wild rock and roller himself. But he was also a gentleman with old school manners who respected the people he worked with. His love and enthusiasm for rock music transmitted itself to everyone he met, and his passing will leave an unfillable void, not only in the Dresden music scene for which he did so much, but also in the hearts of his devastated friends and admirers. We send our condolences to all Enni’s friends and colleagues, and in particular to his wife Manuela, the woman he loved so long and so deeply.

"We've just heard that Lucie Rejchrtová has set up a wonderful new webpage, which tells you about her multifarious activities in the worlds of music, meditation and poetry. Lucie moved to the UK in the early noughties, where she played keyboards with psychedelic groovers Instant Flight. Then she began playing with the legendary Arthur Brown, and through him met many other originators of UK and European psychedelic rock. Check out her musical and personal odyssey on the Nature Grooves webpage. It's really interesting and informative, with great pictures and videos.  She's even added a link to my own music. Soeben wurde ein Interview mit Phil veröffentlicht, das er mit dem Kurator der Directors Lounge, Kenton Turk, vor ein paar Jahren geführt hat, als sie sich in der Dox Gallery in Prag begegnet sind. Dim Locator spielten 2013 in der Directors Lounge bei einem Screening des Rowland S. Howard Biopics "Autoluminiscent".

Am 10. April 2020 erschien auf Fuego eine EP mit drei Songs von Phils früherer Band Spirithouse aus den 1990er Jahren: River Of Light. Die Songs wurden 1992 im EMC Studio in Camden Town, London, aufgenommen und von Eddie Mander produziert. Die Aufnahmen entstanden zwischen den Alben Backwoods Crucifixion (1990) und God Is The Other Face Of The Devil (1993).
Der Titelsong "River Of Light" wurde zuvor nicht veröffentlicht, während die Spirithouse-Version von "Only You" sich sehr von der Version auf dem 1993er Album unterscheidet. "Love Makes Her Shine" nahm Phil später ein weiteres Mal auf, diesmal mit Nikki Sudden, und erschien auf dem Album Golden Vanity.
Die gesamte EP ist als eine Art Aufbruch zu sehen und klingt weder nach dem was davor war noch was danach kam.

Hört Euch "Black Rain" von Harry Staffords fantastischem neuen Album "Gothic Urban Blues" an. Harrys legendäre Band Inca Babies spielte 2019 beim Prager "Drug Me Fest", zusammen mit Dim Locator, Kill The Dandies, und anderen.

Red Door Gallery, Copenhagen, startete ein neues Projekt: "Poetic Phonotheque", eine internationale Gedichtsammlung, die mit der Stimme ihrer Autoren aufgenommen wurde. Das Projekt wurde am "Welttag der Poesie 2020" ins Leben gerufen und begrüßt weiterhin Poesie von überall auf der Welt.
